PhD thesisPhotosynthesis relies upon a proton motive force to produce ATP. Photosynthetic complex I (PS-CI) is a member of the complex I family involved in cyclic electron flow and respiration in cyanobacteria. PS-CI couples ferredoxin (Fd) oxidation and plastoquinone reduction to proton pumping across thylakoid membranes. This process increases the ATP:NADPH ratio in cyanobacteria, promoting survival particularly under stress conditions. However, due to its large size, amphiphilic surface and lability, the functional mechanism of PS-CI is poorly understood.
