Essay about going up to camp in northern Maine. Describes the author\u27s personal history of travelling to Maine on fishing trips with his father beginning in 1972, and his subsequent decision to purchase land with friends and build their own camp. Interspersed with the author\u27s personal reflections are discussions on the etymology of the word camp, and how Maine history - sketched in brief from 17,000 years ago to the arrival of European settlers - influenced the development of what we consider camp in Maine today. The effects of the logging industry on Maine\u27s geography and the accessibility of the unorganized territories of the north are also described.
