Macrophages are innate immune cells responsible for engulfing microbes and cell debris through phagocytosis and orchestrating immune responses to maintain homeostasis. While conducting immune surveillance over all types of organs and tissues, macrophages face inherently heterogeneous microenvironments with unique biophysical features. For instance, microglia residing in the brain, Kupffer cells living in the skin and bone osteoclasts are exposed to very distinct tissue stiffnesses.
