Music therapy, a form of therapy in which musical stimuli and games are used to reach treatment goals, is often chosen as an intervention for people with autism spectrum disorder. While music therapy shows theoretical promise for this population, the literature lacks a clear understanding of music therapy’s efficacy. Past reviews have lumped heterogeneous interventions and treatment goals together for study, preventing the formulation of concrete, specific conclusions about the conditions in which music therapy is or is not effective. This review narrows the scope of the literature by focusing on improvisational music therapy’s impact on social skills.
