Obesity is a complex disorder caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. One candidate is the 30kb IGF2 gene coding for insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) on chromosome 11p15.5. Previous work identified an association between the IGF2 gene 3' untranslated region (3'-UTR) Apal polymorphism and body mass index (BMI) in over 2500 middle-aged Caucasoid males from the Northwick Park Heart Study (NPHSII).
