The ecology of arable springtails (Collembola) was investigated in relation to pesticide exposure and recovery. Lepidocyrtus spp., Isotomurus spp., Bourletiella hortensis, Isotoma viridis, and I. Notabilis overwintered as surface-active adults within fields where they could potentially be exposed to pesticide deposition at a time when little or no crop cover was present. Sminthurus viridis and Sminthurinus elegans overwintered as eggs in the field soil, where exposure to sprayed winter pesticide applications would be expected to be lower than for surface-active species.
