This thesis examines whether Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images can play a useful role in observing the meso-scale structures characteristic of the Gulf of Tehuantepec during 'Norte' conditions, and whether a combination of nearly coincident SAR and AVHRR derived sea surface temperature images can provide new information about these physical processes occurring in the Gulf.Sets of coincident SAR and AVHRR-derived SST images are shown to illustrate different stages in the response of the Gulf of Tehuantepec to wind forcing during a 'Norte' event.
