Health promotion in the workplace : a strategic approach to health promotion in the workplace : the process captured

This research was undertaken in response to a need for models of good practice in the field of health at work. A model of health promotion in the workplace is postulated, to enable the researcher to measure the development of a company health promotion strategy and to provide a theoretical foundation for the study. A Typology of Company Health Services was constructed as part of this model, to act as a frame of reference in tracking the development of a health promotion strategy in Midland Bank Plc. It may, however, be applied to other organisations. The aim of the study was to explore the process of developing a company health promotion strategy. This was to be achieved through a case study of the development of such a strategy. This approach was adopted to enable the researcher to address the following questions: (1) What factors are important when planning a company health promotion strategy? (2) What are the problems experienced when developing and implementing such a strategy? A conceptual framework was constructed for analysing the issues raised whilst developing a company health promotion strategy. This framework comprises three levels and three categories of constructs. The three levels identified are policy, strategy and practice. The constructs are categorised as socio-political, psycho-social and physical. The methodological approach to data collection is outlined in the context of reporting on an `Occupational Health Strategy Review', undertaken during the course of the research. Much of the data collated is presented in a `Company Health Promotion Profile'.
