A series of bi- and tetra-dentate, acyclic and macrocyclic, ligands containing phosphine and/or thioether donors and their transition metal complexes are described.A series of complexes has been prepared with primary or, secondary phosphine ligands with a view to these being used as precursors for the template synthesis of macrocycles. Cu1, Ag1 and Au1 complexes with PhHP(CH2)nPHPh (n = 2,3) have been characterised and in the case of the Cu1 complexes, ring closure reactions to form the P4 donor macrocyclic complex attempted.
