A black and white photograph of a corral with horses and mules at Fort Grant. The caption on the back reads: "This was about the first thing built at Grant to protect the stock from raids. The walls were of adobe and double thick. Along the base of walls inside, were two side shelves. The lower was called a 'kick shelf' to protect walls from damage and for feeding. The upper or 'guard walk' was to conveniently reach the 'peek holes' to fire through in case of attack. In spite of these precautions Indians often made off with stock.
