another word for care is a multi-genre book hybridizing playwriting, poetry, and fiction to centre the story of a computer engineer and her invention of CARERX: an AI companion bot designed to reduce depression in Candian long-term care home patients in the wake of the pandemic. Set in a work portal and an AI bot’s mind, the story is told through e-mail exchanges and live and archived AI chat conversations, addressing the ways digital communication mediates our emotions, lives, work and subconscious. When a “bug” causes a malfunction in BOT0567, a patient with dementia’s life is in danger. As the bug continues to infect, causing the bot’s obsession with human embodiment, Andrea navigates mounting work pressures as her employer plans to expand CARERX to hospitals across North America. Research for this work includes exploration into data privacy, experimentation and research with AI therapy and companion bots, VR research including a dramaturgical session with digital dramaturgs, research into technology, AI, and automation’s interventions in health care, and collaborative digital writing practices. The work is loosely based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and is inspired by non-linear fragmented structures seen in Anne Carson’s Float and Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely. The experimental piece tracks dual protagonists in a series of chronologically associative fragments rooted in parallel and spiral story structures that prioritize the ambiguity, plurality, and non-linearity of neurodivergent and feminist storytelling practices. The piece explores subjects of the ethics of technology in health care, capitalism, care and well-being, collective fear of death and dying, mortality/immortality, elder abuse, addiction, neurodivergence, feminism and other ways of “feeling” and “knowing,” gender, power and success, motherhood/womanhood, family relationships and systems, emotional labour, depression, and mental health stigma. another word for care is mapped around a thematic exploration of the relationship between care and (in)humanity, asking the question: How are our systems of care impacted by the “bug” that is our complex humanity?Arts, Faculty ofGraduat
