Linking key paper coating properties such as gloss, opacity, and brightness to fundamental physical characteristics of the coating has been explored extensively over the last 20 years. Studies in this area have led to a greater understanding of the role of pore size, pore volume, and/or particle size distribution of the coating components in producing desired end use properties. Yet the physical measurements made on the coating are not directly linked to the observed performance in terms of light scattering.
