Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is being standardized for Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) is a fast packet switching technology in which all information is carried on fixed size packets called cell (53) and is using statistical multiplexing to achieve better utilization of network resources such as bandwidths and buffers. This paper discusses the many challenges and issues involved in realizing a broadband multimedia network. Also, the design of an new transmission scheduling mechanism that not only guarantees QOS requirements for the different traffic classes, but can also transport bursts of session as a whole, thereby preserving integrity of user talkspurt in a bursty traffic environment is presented
