Impact of Distraction Technique on Levels of Pain during Invasive Immunization among Toddlers at Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre, Vellore

INTRODUCTION: Pain is a distressing feeling often caused by intense or damaging stimuli. Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Impact of distraction technique on levels of pain during invasive immunization among toddlers at Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre, Vellore. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the impact of distraction technique on levels of pain among toddlers in the experimental group. 2. To assess the level of pain among toddlers in the control group. 3. To find out the association between the posttest levels of pain and the selected demographic variables in experimental group. HYPOTHESIS: H1 : There is a significant difference between the levels of pain among Children in experimental and control group. H2 : There is significant association between posttest levels of pain and the selected demographic and clinical variable in the experimental group. METHODS: The research design selected was quasi experimental one group posttest design. The tool consisted of demographic variables, clinical variables and Modified Wong Baker Faces pain rating scale to assess the levels of pain during invasive immunization among toddlers. Sixty samples were selected and divided into two groups experimental and control group by purposive sampling technique. Each group had 30 samples. The experimental group was given the distraction technique with bubble shooter and the control group was not provided any distraction technique. The descriptive and inferential statistics used were ‘chi’ square and unpaired ‘t’ test. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: The posttest among the experimental group shows that 27 (90%) of the toddlers have mild pain, 3 (10%) of the toddlers have moderate pain, none of them have no pain or severe pain. In control group 25 (83%) of the toddlers had moderate pain, 5 (16.70%) of the toddlers have severe pain. The mean score of levels of pain in control group was 6.7 and in experimental group was 3.4.
