A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme on Knowledge regarding prevention of Varicose Vein among Police Personnel working in Chennai

INTRODUCTION: Varicose veins are one of the chief preventable diseases which are associated with veins. It is a serious disease, which poses threat to life of patient when effective and efficient measures are not taken. Modern world a lot of occupations and professions have designed up where people are required to either continuously stand for a long time or made to sit hanging down for a considerable time. The varicose vein sufferers the following professions like computer professionals, security guards, traffic police, salesmen working at counters in departmental stores, teachers, nurses, paramedical workers working in various hospital set ups and persons doing desk jobs day in and day out. TITLE: “A study to assess the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on knowledge regarding prevention of varicose vein among police personnel working in Chennai.” OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the pre-test level of knowledge on prevention of varicose vein among police personnel. To evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on prevention of varicose vein among police personnel by comparing post-test knowledge scores. 2. To compare the pre-test and post-test level of knowledge on prevention of varicose vein among police personnel. 3. To find out the association between post-test knowledge scores with selected demographic variables. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Planned questionnaire tool was used to assess the level of knowledge of varicose vein and knowledge on prevention of varicose vein among police personnel. 70 police personnel were divided in to seven groups.10 members in each group. Pre-test level of knowledge on prevention of varicose vein was assessed in the first day of first week. Following the assessment planned teaching programme was administered in groups. Group sessions were conducted for 45 minutes to 1 hour; planned teaching programme was administered using visual troops, power point, flash card, pamphlet, exercise demonstration, calendar. After planned teaching programme one-week later post-test level of knowledge regarding prevention of varicose vein was assessed. 10 police personnel not attend during the post -test. The data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: The effectiveness of planned teaching programme on knowledge regarding prevention of varicose vein among police personnel to assessed by pre-test and post-test scored. Findings of the study showed that the pre-test mean of (12.52) with the SD is (3.53) and after the planned teaching programme the post -test mean value of (24.35) with the SD is (2.28) so the computed t value is (25.9) which is highly statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Hence, planned teaching program is appropriate and feasible to implement in all settings. It would help the persons to improve their knowledge on preventive measures of varicose vein and reduce risk of complication effectively and improve their health status
