The Society, State and Jihad in Daura c.1750-1806

Since the 1804 Jihad of Sheikh Uthman Danfodio, there were major socio-economic and  political transformations throughout the Hausaland to which Daura was an integral part. Relying on both oral and written sources, this paper traces the historical development of Daura laying emphasis on the nature of the society and the state before the Jihad years, the migration of the Fulbe and their role in overthrowing the Hausa state of Daura, as well as the impact of the Jihad on the socio-political and economic life of the people of the area. The paper found out that though the Jihad succeeded in the establishment of a theocratic state, it also came along with new sociopolitical problems
