Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent of trichomoniasis, a common cause of vaginitis. Despite being a readily diagnosed and treatable sexually transmitted disease (STD), trichomoniasis is not a reportable infection and its control has received relatively little emphasis from public health STD control programs. It is one of the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infections worldwide. It is associated with potentially serious complications such as preterm birth and human immunodeficiency virus acquisition and transmission.
