Written on the back of the photograph is, "18 Ships carried / my Base Ball Team to / Univ. of Texas & etc. at / Austin Tex. / Kelly Field Foot Ball / won the Southern Champs / in 1918."Kelly Field began operations a few days before the United States entered WWI. After the U.S. entry, Kelly grew into the largest aviation field in the nation. It served as a reception and testing center for recruits and training center for new pilots, mechanics, cooks and bakers, and engineering and supply officers during the war
