This work analyses the influence of the cord-grass Spartina alterniflora over the distribution and density of the gastropod Neritina virginea in salt marshes distributed along an environmental energy gradient, during the summer and winter of 1992. Population densities of N. virginea are not directly related to the environmental gradient, but are affected by the density and mean height of plant cover. Seasonal differences were not registered in the gastropod densities, probably due to the lack of recruitment during the study period. Densities of N. virginea and the biomass of S. alterniflora were significantly correlated.
