What is Transitional Justice? Following large-scale civil conflicts, societies often create transitional justice mechanisms (TJMs) to address the human rights abuses and crimes committed during the conflict. These mechanisms are critical in providing the opportunity for reconciliation and accountability since preexisting judicial institutions in the postwar context often do not possess the institutional strength to investigate, prosecute, and arbitrate effectively pervasive and grave human rights abuses. Establishing these mechanisms provides a platform for survivors of human rights violations to access justice and ultimately creates a foundation for consolidating long-term peace in these postwar countries.
