The purpose of this dissertation is a study of Matthew Arnold\u27s principles concerning literary criticism. We are not interested here in Arnold as a creative writer, either in prose or in poetry, but merely in his critical theories. The wealth of material left by him is so great that we feel a concise study of it will be welcomed by those whose time is limited and who would like to have easy access to his doctrine on the nature of criticism
