In the 1970s the world was divided due to Cold War tensions, and Cuba in the Americas represented the Soviet Union's stronghold in the U.S. neighborhood. Fidel had cemented an authoritarian regime on the island thanks to the support of the USSR, and exerted strong political influence also in North and Central Africa as part of the communist strategy.
