Prior studies by Bower (1971) and Gardner (1971) have claimed that 5 month olds, in visual tracking situations, reveal that they have a concept of object permanence in Piaget's Stage VI sense. This study was designed to evaluate their claim. Toward this end, the investigation had three distinct purposes: 1) to establish the characteristics of infants' tracking behavior in a linear tracking task when no screens are involved; 2) to observe and characterize the infants' tracking behavior and coping strategies when a screen is placed at the center of the track, and 3) to diagnose levels of object concept via the introduction of trick situations designed to violate possible expectations of infants.
