One use of stainless steel 316 as a heat exchanger to heat crude oil that would be processed later by destilation. SS 316 is widely used due to corrosion resilience and strength better than carbon steel and cast iron, thus reducing maintenance costs. On the 316 stainless steel field application would experience welding to connect shell parts to the heat exchanger, but in the welding process there would be heat treatment and cause a mechanical downturn in SS 316.
