Phosphorous is another nutrient that is critically important for legumes and the clover plants that are fixing nitrogen, but all plants need phosphorous as they do nitrogen. Legumes need a higher level of P fertility than the neighbouring grass plants. Phosphorus is vital for plant growth, and is a component of the nucleic acid structure of plants and bio-membranes. Therefore, it is important in cell division and tissue development. It is also involved in the energy metabolism of cells and is required for the biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites in plants.
