In this thesis, we focus on two optical phenomena for which noise has a strong influence. In the first case, we analyze how a precise characterization of the noise allows the degree of polarization of the light backscattered by an object to be estimated from a single intensity image under coherent illumination. By determining a bound on the minimum estimation variance (Cramer-Rao bound) and by comparing the performance of different estimators, we characterize the precision of such an estimation method.
