Cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibrils are nano-sized cellulose obtained by top-down approaches such as isolation and extraction both by chemical and physical methods. Due to the abundance, high-strength, and high-stiff properties of nanocrystals and nanofibrils, they can be used as reinforcement for composite films. This review aims to demonstrate the efficiency of cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibrils as reinforcement for composite films based on the mechanical properties, surface wetting, and crystallinity of the resulting composite films.
