This article studies the civil (federalists vs. national government), interethnic (provincial governments vs. the Ranqueles’ and Pehuenches’ cacicatos) and social conflicts at the southern frontier of Córdoba and the Cuyo region during the 1860s. By studying these conflicts, I argue that the independent indigenous society under study played a key role in shaping Argentina’s nation state formation process and that, at the local level, the social conflict was particularly multiethnic.
