A escravidão brasileira à época da Independência

We first provide estimates of the "stock" and "flow" of enslaved people in Brazil in the first half of the nineteenth century, emphasizing the intensification of the captive's inflow. Then we analyze the impacts of these numbers on the characteristics of Brazilian slavery during the Independence period focusing on two themes. The first, the pattern of the allocation of captive ownership, allows us to understand the widespread dissemination of that ownership. As to the second, the slave families, we show the conjuncture of their vulnerability and resilience in facing the cruelty of enslavement. Finally, we discuss the eventual direct participation of enslaved people in the process of political emancipation, showing the characteristics of the Black Party. In the final considerations, we highlight aspects of the trajectory of slavery up to its abolition, pointing out the deep scars left by it that are still evident today.Fornecemos, de início, estimativas do “estoque” e do “fluxo” de pessoas escravizadas no Brasil na primeira metade do século XIX, enfatizando a intensificação da entrada de cativos. Em seguida, analisamos os impactos desses números nas características da escravidão brasileira à época da Independência, privilegiando dois temas. O primeiro, o padrão da distribuição da posse de cativos, permite-nos perceber o alargamento da disseminação daquela posse. Quanto ao segundo, as famílias escravas, evidenciamos a concomitância de sua vulnerabilidade e resiliência no enfrentamento dos rigores do cativeiro. Por fim, discutimos a eventual participação direta das pessoas escravizadas no processo de emancipação política, apresentando as características do Partido Negro. Nas considerações finais, destacamos aspectos da trajetória da escravidão até sua abolição, apontando as cicatrizes profundas por ela deixadas, ainda nitidamente visíveis em nossos dias
