Today, people grant a legal value, meaning an institutional constraint to a plurality of norms in the labour process in Africa. We will question the nature of these norms: technical exogenous norms resulting from the colonial period, and endogenous community norms, coming from the local history. How do these two heterogeneous norm systems articulate together in a same working activity? In order to understand the profound social changes in African society, our starting point will be the analysis of the working activity. The hypothesis consists in considering labour as a conflicting space where choices among different norm systems are made by the working protagonists.
