International audienceThis paper examines the local consequences of the extension of French citizenship to former "native subjects" of New Caledonia in 1946. To the Melanesians of the commune of Koné, the social and political rights attached to this new status meant in practice the building of the first water pipes in tribes from the 1950s. Elaborated under missionary supervision, these Kanak claims on water have led the Municipality of Koné to intervene in a political space that was strictly controlled by "chiefdoms" until then.
