International audienceThis article tackles the notion of interior monologue. Starting from examples drawn from literary works, its aim is to develop the idea that interior monologue is not to be restricted to first person singular contexts. Third person examples using the technique of free indirect style can also be said to belong to the category of interior monologue. It is then argued that interior monologue is not a linguistic technique restricted to the first person but a narratological category, which can include either reported speech, as a technique for rendering consciousness, or what Genette calls " discours immédiat ".
