International audienceThis paper is a contribution to the running debates about how to frame accurate land cover databases on a large scale, for urban and suburban areas. It investigates the use of photo interpretation for aerial photographs, and offers a comparison between two approaches. One of these, first, characterises polygons as homogeneous pieces of land cover, with reference to a preset standard classification, then manually digitizes them. The second approach is based on the attribution of land cover information to existing digitized spatial units, i.e. a digital cadastral database.
