Genre, prohibition et commerce de détail : les femmes et la circulation des indiennes en Lyonnais et Dauphiné (1686-1759)

International audienceThe fashion for printed, painted or dyed cotton fabrics, originally imported from the Indies and later manufactured in Europe, spread quickly throughout France during the last decades of the seventeenth century. However, following pressure from silk and wool manufacturers, bans on imports, manufacture and wearing of cotton were introduced into the kingdom between 1686 and 1759, as in most parts of Europe. During the eighteenth century, two regions, Dauphiné and the Lyonnais which lie on France’s frontier with Savoy and the principality of Dombes, provided smugglers with an ideal opportunity for bringing in cotton canvas produced in large quantities by factories in Geneva and the Swiss Cantons. Despite court orders and arrests, smuggling remained endemic, at least until 1759. Research into the fashion for calicos in Europe at the end of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries has until now shown that women from all walks of life were the main customers for these light and coloured fabrics. The roles they played, at the top of the chain, in terms of production and distribution of fabrics, are less well known. By looking beyond the stereotypes that see them systematically as ‘menials’ carrying out minor tasks at the end of the chain, this article demonstrates how fashion and new tastes among a growing section of the population interested in calicos gave women opportunities to operate in the economy at various levels in the production and distribution of calicos.Le goût pour les cotonnades imprimées, teintes et/ou peintes, venues à l’origine « des Indes » puis fabriquées en Europe même, s’est diffusé de façon spectaculaire dans la société française des dernières décennies du XVIIe siècle. Sous la pression des industriels français de la soie et de la laine, l’importation, la production et le port de toiles de coton sont progressivement interdits à partir de 1686 et ce jusqu’à la levée de la prohibition en 1759. Mais la demande est telle qu’une intense contrebande se développe aux franges terrestres et maritimes du royaume. Provinces frontières avec la Savoie et la Principauté de Dombes, le Dauphiné et le Lyonnais offrent au XVIIIe siècle un terrain de choix aux trafics illicites visant à introduire dans le royaume de France les toiles prohibées.Les travaux sur la vogue des indiennes dans l’Europe de la fin du XVIIe et du XVIIIe siècle ont jusqu’à présent montré que les femmes étaient les principales consommatrices, toutes appartenances sociales confondues, de ces tissus de coton légers et colorés. Les rôles qu’elles jouent, en amont, dans la production et la circulation de ces étoffes sont, eux, beaucoup plus mal connus. Au-delà des stéréotypes les associant systématiquement aux « petites mains » qui n’effectuent que des tâches mineures, en bout de chaîne, cette étude montre comment la mode et le goût nouveau d’une part grandissante de la population pour les cotonnades donnent aux femmes des opportunités d’agir économiquement, à différentes échelles, dans les circuits de distribution des indiennes
