International audienceWhile collective investigation offers an opportunity to compare viewpoints on a single object, it can also result in ways to approach complex institutions that are not very open to ethnographic research. This research project on the pharmaceutical industry, which involved ten sociologists, economists and historians, attests to the obstacles involved. The division of work made it possible to overcome access denied to the field and to find new means of enquiry, as well as to keep up with the objective of gaining precise empirical knowledge of a complex object. In addition, collective work paved the way to two forms of comparison : internal comparisons within the pharmaceutical sector, since different researchers had access to distinct fields of enquiry which could then be contrasted ; and external comparisons, as each researcher involved brought knowledge of another sector that shared some characteristics with the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, the article examines the type of writing that was favored by collective work in order to understand how it meets both the epistemological requirements of ethnographic enquiry, and the individual assessment of research.Si l'enquête collective propose un espace de confrontation de points de vue sur un même objet, elle recèle aussi des vertus pour aborder des institutions complexes et peu ouvertes à la recherche ethnographique. En témoigne une recherche sur l'industrie du médicament qui a mobilisé une dizaine de sociologues, économistes et historiens. La division du travail a permis de surmonter les refus d'enquête et de trouver de nouvelles voies d'investigation, ainsi que de tenir l'objectif d'une connaissance empirique précisément fondée sur un objet complexe. Au-delà, deux types de comparatisme ont été ouverts par la pratique collective de l'enquête. Interne au secteur pharmaceutique tout d'abord, par l'accès des différents chercheurs à des terrains distincts, mis en correspondance. Externe ensuite, par la mobilisation de chercheurs apportant chacun la connaissance préalable d'un univers ayant une parenté ponctuelle avec la pharmacie. L'article interroge enfin l'écriture que la forme collective a favorisée pour saisir comment elle répond aux attendus épistémologiques de l'enquête ethnographique et aux modalités d'évaluation individuelle de la recherche
