ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this article is to discuss severe malaria along with advancements in its treatment and prevention. Method: A PubMed online search was conducted for the following: malaria, severe malaria, cerebral malaria, malaria treatment, malaria vaccine. Results: Instances of malaria are increasing, as is the severity of cases, which has prompted the development and trials of a new vaccine. Conclusion: Severe malaria is a crucial topic for healthcare providers to be aware of, as it affects so many worldwide. Even if a provider only practices in the U.S., where malaria is not prevalent, it is still important for them to be aware of diseases that affect those in other parts of the world.
