Purpose: The purpose of this review is to explore recent evidence and provide best practice updates for management of mild-to-moderate diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) within the emergency department (ED). Method: A PubMed and Cochrane Library literature search was conducted to identify recent studies and reviews detailing the nuances and controversies of DKA management. Results: A number of small sample size clinical trials were found addressing fluid and insulin management of DKA and use of DKA protocols. Two clinical review articles were also found. Conclusion: DKA incidence is increasing, and EDs are newly responsible for its management. EDs should review recent evidence and develop DKA-specific protocols for use within their facility. Furth...
