The impact of mass employment has long been apprehended through male subjects. Women’s experience of work deprivation was long ill known and seldom studied. In this research among men and women who have been dismissed from closed up Moulinex factories in Normandy, France, experience of unemployment among women appears to be singular. In comparison that experienced by men, sufferance of unemployed women more often leads to health problems, social isolation and home and identity lock-ups. A for men, their higher chances of finding a job again as well as their higher ability to keep up their professional network preserve them from these feelings.
