Indo-Pacific: The Reconstruction of a Region

Der Indo-Pazifik repräsentiert eine neue Konzeptualisierung dessen, wer und was Asien ausmacht. Australien, Indien, Japan und die USA sind die wichtigsten Befürworter. Die Region des Indischen Ozeans und der asiatisch-pazifische Raum werden als ein zusammenhängendes Gebiet verstanden. Obwohl die Richtung des neuen Begriffs unklar bleibt, ist der Übergang vom bisher verwendeten „Asien-Pazifik“ mit vier übergreifenden Trends verbunden: eine Verschiebung von einer wirtschaftlich- zu einer sicherheitsdominierten Agenda, von einem Bottom-up- zu einem Top-down-Regionalismus, Multilateralismus zu Minilateralismus, einschliesslich bis zum Ausschluss Chinas.The Indo-Pacific represents a new conceptualization of who and what constitutes Asia. Australia, India, Japan, and the United States are its main proponents. The Indian Ocean region and the Asia-Pacific are understood as one contiguous area. Although the new concept’s trajectory remains unclear, the transition from the hitherto used “Asia-Pacific” is associated with four overarching trends: a shift from an economy- to a security-dominated agenda, bottom-up to top-down regionalism, multilateralism to minilateralism, and including to excluding China.ISSN:1664-066
