Public Roads continues to promote highway research and technology transfer.The first two issues of Public Roads were created by Office of Public Roads and Rural Engineering in the Department of Agriculture before being passed to the Department of Agriculture\u2019s Bureau of Good Roads. Beginning in July 1939, authorship of Public Roads passed to the U.S. Federal Works Agency, Public Roads Administration. The Bureau of Public Roads (first in the General Services Administration, and then at the Department of Commerce) took over Public Roads in August 1949. With the creation of a unified Department of Transportation in 1967, the Bureau of Public Roads and the Public Roads journal came under the authority of the Federal Highway Administration in April 1967. The Bureau of Public Roads was phased out in autumn 1970 by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). FHWA has continued to produce Public Roads from October 1970 to the present.
