This article examines current attempts to regulate interest groups operating in the European Parliament and the European Commission and points up the difficulties caused by the dearth of legislation in this domain. While Parliament has opted to apply compulsory standards to all interest groups, particularly mandatory registration, the Commission has always opposed such measures, favouring self-regulation instead. The surge in lobbying since the early 1990s, however, and above all the spread of euroscepticism make this an increasingly sensitive issue.
