What is Knowledge Society?: The epistemic turn

The goal is to draw a clear distinction between the idea of « knowledge economy » and the project of « knowledge society », the first being regularly understood as the real meaning the second. Based on various debates in early 2000s when the Internet bubble bursted, the article explains why it is was wrong to oppose a new high tech economy to an « old economy ». The on-going mutation of the conception, organization and role of research could not be reduced to "new technologies". When research policies concern all aspects of life in society, the real long-term mutation is that research and innovation need to be understood from the point of view of « society ».L'objectif est d'opposer « société de connaissance » et « économie de la connaissance ». Il synthétise les débats sur la « nouvelle économie » au début des années 2000, après l'éclatement de la bulle Internet qui fut aussi l'éclatement d'une bulle idéologique, celle d'une « économie de la connaissance ». Le problème n'était pas et n'est pas encore aujourd'hui d'opposer une « ancienne économie » (manufacturière, énergétique, militaire, etc.) à une nouvelle, mais de réfuter l'idée que la mutation en cours depuis les années 1980 de la conception, de l'organisation et du rôle de la recherche se réduise aux « nouvelles technologies »
