Modern approaches to teaching Japanese at a language university are analyzed in the article. It has been revealed that a significant place is given to the formation of foreign language communicative competence within the framework of the issues of teaching the Japanese language. The JF Standard for teaching and assessment of Japanese language progress was developed by the Japan Foundation. It is based on the CEFR principles. It has been proved that it is required to have an idea of the Japanese lifestyle in order to implement efficient communication in the oriental language, traditions, and customs.
