Fabriquer l'animal de compagnie. Ethnographie d'un refuge S.P.A.

International audienceThis paper will try to inform the way the French Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPA) participates actively in the redefining of human/animal relationships. Rather than on the legislative and media fights of the SPA, the focus here is on the everyday activities of protection. Thus, we will show that, although they appear to be routine work, disconnected from the ideal of animal protection, their impact is eminently political. Through an ethnographical account of a SPA animal shelter, we will analyze this space as a requalification apparatus, in which animals are transformed into singular beings, fitted to be integrated to the human society. The shelter will be seen as a matrix, shaping beings the most capable of enacting pacified human/animal relationships. The various sub-spaces which compose the shelter, the relational regimes which we can observe there, and the tests procedures used to manage the "flow" of animals, will be described. We shall also see how the shelter as an apparatus helps to solve tensions between contradictory aspects animal protection.A travers cet article, il sera question de documenter la façon dont la Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) participe de manière active à la redéfinition des rapports humains/animaux. En choisissant de nous focaliser sur la quotidienneté des actes de protection, plutôt que sur les combats législatifs et médiatiques de la SPA, nous montrerons que, malgré leur apparence routinière, leur portée est éminemment politique. En nous appuyant sur l'ethnographie d'un refuge SPA, nous aborderons cet espace comme un dispositif de requalification de l'animal en vue de son intégration dans la société humaine. A travers la description des différents sous-espaces qui le composent, des régimes relationnels que l'on peut y observer, et du système d'épreuves utilisé pour gérer le " flux " des animaux, le refuge sera vu comme une matrice façonnant les êtres les plus aptes à concrétiser une relation pacifiée entre humains et animaux. Nous verrons également comment le dispositif refuge permet de résoudre les tensions entre des aspects contradictoires de l'activité de protection
