International audienceHow does divine eloquence look like ? The rhetoric figures in the Bible were noticed indeed by the Fathers of the Church, such as Augustine and Cassiodore. As a witness of a trend coming from Spain in the VIIth century to Smaragdus in the IXth, Bede even composed a treatise of stylistic figures with only biblical and patristic citations. Among the Greeks, in Adrian, in the Vth century, and later on, as one can see in the Rhetores Graeci, the byzantine manuals quoted the Bible as well, without changing their classical models.
