The objective was to analyze the use of central venous catheters for insertion periphery in newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Retrospective, descriptive and quantitative research. The data were collected in a Federal School of Rio de Janeiro, from April to July 2018, in 80 medical records. The predominant gestational age was prematurity (83%), as well as the diagnosis of hospitalization (85.2%); the predominant weight was between 100 and 2000 grams (51.1%), with low weight related or not to intravenous therapy prolonged the most frequent reason for insertion of catheters (35.2%), with time more than 5 days in the majority (81.8%) of the medical records analyzed.
