I compared the effect of volatiles and incorporated tissues of Brassica juncea and Sinapis alba against weeds in laboratory, glasshouse and under field conditions. Volatiles from crushed leaves of B. juncea strongly reduced the emergence and root elongation of Tripleurospermum inodorum in agar-plates, whereas volatiles from S. alba had only a little effect. However, incorporation of dried S. alba leaves or seed meal (1% w/w) into pot soil inhibited emergence and growth of T. inodorum and Pisum sativum much more than B. juncea.
