The effect of manual drawing of the plant and natural landscape on environmental affection and environmental behavioral intention

Despite multitude of arguments and counterarguments surrounding this complex issue, relatively little is known about the process by which people form a positive attitude toward the environment that brings ecologically conducive behaviors, potential key elements that may have profound impact on environmental outcomes. Existing studies on this subject have observed that the psychological determinants of pro-environmental behaviors are closely related to the level of an individual’s emotional sensitivity toward the environment: the higher the affective concerns for the environment, the greater the intention to act for conservation. Given this linkage, people’s direct experience with the natural environment is likely to be an important factor in the development of a pro-environmental attitude that leads to conservation efforts. In this study, we contribute to the body of literature by focusing on one such means for direct experience: hand-drawing of natural objects. The act of drawing natural objects is one of the fundamental ways of understanding the nature. In the traditions of geology and botany, the process of manually drawing natural landscapes and plants has been recognized as an essential step in learning about the natural environment. By contrast, the role of manual drawing has received relatively little attention in the field of environmental research. Building on the theories of pro-environmental attitude formation found in the literature, in this study we analyze the data collected from a field research, testing the hypothesis that manual drawings of natural landscapes and plants will positively influence people's affective concerns for the environment and elicit pro-environmental behavior. The field research was conducted at two sites with semi-natural areas that featured diverse plant species. Participants at the Seoul Olympic Park engaged in landscape sketching tasks, while participants at the Seoul National University observed and drew plant species. Verbal narrative data were collected through pre- and post-interviews, and drawing scores and survey answers were obtained and transformed into numerical data. Qualitative and quantitative data analyses were conducted using inductive and statistical methods. The results of analyses support the hypotheses that drawing of plants and the natural environment is a factor in promoting people’s intentions pro-environmental behavior. In the qualitative portion of the analysis, categories that imply the participants’ emotional attachment to the environment and the moral responsibility for preservation were identified. In addition, results from quantitative analysis indicate that plant drawing has a positive impact on the attitude toward plants and the environmental affection but not on the pro-environmental behavioral intention. It is found that two styles of drawing expression, analytical-objective and expressive-subjective, have varying degree of effect on the behavioral component. These findings suggest that experiencing the natural environment via manual drawing can be an important driver of people's intention and action for environmental conservation. As the public became desensitized to the deteriorated ecological state due to ever-decreasing contacts with the natural environment, various measures to promote an awareness for environment have been proposed.
