Studi ini menyelidiki bagaimana opresi rasial Afro-Amerika tercermin dalam puisi penyair kulit hitam, Paul Laurence Dunbar dan Amiri Baraka. Menggunakan metode deskriptif-analitis, penelitian ini menganalisis kata, frasa, dan klausa yang menunjukkan opresi rasial Afro-Amerika dalam sepuluh puisi pilihan Paul Laurence Dunbar dan Amiri Baraka. Semiotika Roland Barthes digunakan untuk mendapatkan interpretasi dari tanda-tanda yang digunakan untuk menyampaikan makna dalam puisi. Interpretasi ini kemudian diperkuat dengan mengaitkan makna dengan konteks sosial-budaya puisi menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi sastra Wellek dan Warren.
