This tutorial provides an introduction to basic concepts of ecology such as species extinction, generalist and specialist adaptation strategies, and the relation between extinction of one species and the evolution of other species. It discusses ways in which species become endangered and how they might recover; describes the adaptation strategies of several plants and animals; and considers the possible extinction of conifer trees and their replacement by warmer-climate species as the climate changes. There is also a brief discussion of biological diversity and why it is necessary for a healthy ecosystem. A quiz and glossary are included. Educational levels: Intermediate elementary, Middle school
